The cancer ward of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas is home for
hundreds of young children who face the greatest challenge of their young lives.
While research and medicine are making new strides every day towards
conquering the disease that has so greatly affected the health of these young
people, still we can do more to encourage and enliven their daily lives.
A new project, called Project Tolero, will bring a sense of how broad and wonderful
the world can be outside the halls of the hospital. The plan is simple. A teddy bear
will be sent to you with a journal and a passport. All we ask is that you take your
teddy bear for a sightseeing adventure of your city. On this adventure, we hope you
will take photographs of your teddy bear in various locations and write a short
journal of what your teddy bear might have seen and heard. When it is time for your

teddy bear to travel to a new destination, we ask that you stamp his passport with something that will record his stay in your city.
Even a hand-drawn stamp that includes the name of your city and country will do.
Then we would ask that you pack the teddy bear in his travel box and send him on his way to a new destination provided for you in a
travel itinerary. Once each teddy bear's journal is full, he should be returned to Houston, where we will present a young cancer
patient with a wonderful new friend who will bring with him hours of interesting sights and facts about the world.
Your participation in this project is purely voluntary. We ask only that, if you accept a traveling teddy bear, you maintain the progress
of his journey. No teddy bear wants to be friendless and forgotten in a box in someone's garage, just as no child should be
friendless and forgotten in a hospital ward to fight the battle of his or her life.
